TEST of Hunt Showdown: The best cooperative FPS Of Recent years

Crytek's last chance game, which we've been talking about for over a year, Hunt: Showdown, is finally available in final version. And as expected after having long tasted the early access: it's a great success!

Hunt: Showdown is a cooperative FPS taking place in Louisiana from the late nineteenth century, somewhat fictitious. It embodies hunters to purge the world of giant demonic creatures. One game uses 10 players, 5 groups of 2 hunters and, since the release, it is now possible to compose trios. So this is a game of PvPvE type ... particularly consistent and intelligent in his proposal: to kill one of the two bosses, recover his loot and escape to the point of extraction to recover XP and money.

Artistically and technically bluffing
To retransmit its deliciously dark atmosphere, Crytek is using the Cry Engine, which is doing wonders here. Sumptuous light games, bluffing smoke effects, quality textures ... Only certain animations are a little behind with a rigidity in the movements. We reassure you it is not enough to spoil the party. The bayous represent a perfect playground for this America of 1895, and the different types of weather and hours of the day come to bring a thick layer of mystery to these particularly dark environments. The western atmosphere is present, even if in this case the game takes place in the east of the USA. This location allows developers to juggle well-known equipment from the Western Conquest (Peacemaker revolver, levered Winchester rifle in custody, etc.) and an arsenal that is modernized with the first semi-automatic pistols and the first ones. "modern" bolt action carbines (Mosin-Nagant, Mauser C96, etc.) of the First World War.

What to have fun
At this level, be aware that the available equipment is simply gargantuan. From the crossbow to the French rifle Lebel through many types of grenades (incendiary, chemical, etc.). In addition to your primary and secondary weapon, your hunter can also carry tools and equipment (care, lures, traps, etc.). Beforehand, it is better (if you play with a friend or two) to agree on a sensible distribution to have enough to cope with as many situations as possible. Environments are sprinkled with monsters of all kinds, from simple zombies to dog packs. They represent a constant threat on two levels. Physically already, it is an undeniable danger. It's also problematic at the sound level. A zombie load us and in the stress we slaughter it with our revolver awkwardly while trying to be silent at all costs. And there is climbing: the other players hear us and hunt us, and the shooting that follows can itself alert the monsters around and create chaos. In other cases, a shootout noise may also force other players to bury themselves while the storm passes.

Hunt: Showdown is designed to push the ambush and the silent approach. When you manage to zigzuck one of the two giant monsters (including a giant Spider that always makes us shiver), we get his booty. The man is a wolf for the man, some players wait for you to do the "dirty work" then you wait for a lookout on the way back and you cut the grass under the foot. There are many mechanics that can alert you of your presence or that of your opponents: crows flying, dogs barking in the village, hens shouting as they approach a farm, steps on a floor that creaks ... We advise you to play the headphones, it is even more than a board but a gameplay element in itself.

Uncompromising
Speaking of intransigence, up to level 11 our hunters, once dead, are replayable. Everything is fine. Once past this decisive course, the death is final. Once one of our avatars six feet underground, we must recruit another. This allows to vary between different skins, some buy elsewhere with blood points that themselves are recovered (slowly) in play or using real money. The only notion of micro-transactions therefore concerns only cosmetics.

The other in-game currency is the dollar that is used to buy equipment and weapons for our hunters. Know also that it is also possible to strictly spend nothing on weapons (if not at the beginning of the game) and that there is a way to just loot his arsenal on the still smoking corpses of our opponents .
